With Mallikarjun Kharge, Gandhis Show Old Habits Die Hard

Congress President Election: Mallikarjun Kharge has entered the race for Congress president today. (File)

New Delhi:

A day after announcing that he will run for Congress President, Digvijaya Singh today announced that he’s dropping out. That decision is based on Mallikarjun Kharge being put forward as the candidate backed by the Gandhis.

“Kharge ji is my leader and my senior. I asked him yesterday if he wanted to contest. He said no. I met him again today. I told him I am with you fully if you are contesting. I can’t think of contesting against him. He is filing his nomination and I will be his proposer,” said Digvijaya Singh, 75.

Digvijaya Singh had not met Sonia Gandhi, the current Congress boss, before he announced his decision to run for her job. That was not a snub or an act of defiance, a la Ashok Gehlot. Instead, sources have explained, Digvijaya Singh was aware all along that his role was to serve as a ‘dummy candidate’ till the Gandhis decided on their choice.

Their initial vote went to Ashok Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. But the proposal – Mr Gehlot was urged on multiple occasions to contest the election including by Sonia Gandhi – blew up when Mr Gehlot was categorically told that in serving as President, he would have to give up his job as Chief Minister of Rajasthan. For the Gandhis, this was a quick-fix solution to a long-running problem in the desert state: Sachin Pilot, 45, is owed a shot at Chief Minister, which was promised to him when the party won the state in 2018. By moving Ashok Gehlot to Delhi, the Gandhis would have a trusted aide as the party boss and install Sachin Pilot as the head of the Rajasthan government. Two birds with one stone.

Except Ashok Gehlot refused to play ball. So in Jaipur, 92 MLAs threatened to resign in a show of support for him. Their condition was clear: under no circumstances could Sachin Pilot be made Chief Minister. Ashok Gehlot wanted to pick his replacement and there was no way Sachin Pilot was making even the long list.

The Gandhis were confronted with a double-fisted punch: a public revolt by a senior and trusted loyalist and the prospect of a shaky government in one of the few states that the Congress still governs.

Last evening, Ashok Gehlot met with Sonia Gandhi and emerged remorseful. He said he had apologized to her, taking ‘moral responsibility’ for the ‘indiscipline’ of the Congress MLAs in Rajasthan, that he would not run as President, and that Sonia Gandhi alone will decide if he will continue as Chief Minister. The comments provided a face-saver to the “High Command”.

Today, Ashok Gehlot reiterated his devotion to the Congress’ central leadership and said he would be among those who propose the name of Mallikarjun Kharge for President. More salve to ease the slow burn inflicted by him.

Shashi Tharoor, undaunted by the fact that his opponent has the endorsement of the only section of the party that matters, has filed his nomination today, so his bid is now official. It’s an important symbolic move to push the Congress into exercising choice, rather than accepting orders.

However, it is understood that accepting orders will be the remit of Mallikarjun Kharge, who is near certain to be elected. “A parallel power centre” of the Gandhis will call the shots, said sources, and will frustrate what Shashi Tharoor has aimed at: a transparency in operations that allows an array of voices. For the Congress, this is no step forward, many steps back.

MotoGP announces Grand Prix of Bharat in 2023. provisional dates set for 22-24 Sept

0

MotoGP on Friday confirmed that it will race in India from 2023, marking the return of a big ticket motorsport event in the country after Formula 1’s departure nine years ago.

The world’s premier two-wheel racing championship will be held at the Buddh International Circuit, which staged Formula 1 from 2011 to 2013. The provisional dates for the event are set for September 22-24 2023.

Top officials from MotoGP’s commercial rights holder Dorna had visited India earlier this month to sign a seven-year MoU with Indian race promoters Fairstreet Sports (FSS). They had also held meetings with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

“We’re very proud to announce that Buddh International Circuit will be on the 2023 calendar. We have a lot of fans in India and we’re excited to be able to bring the sport to them,” Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta said in a statement.

The track will need to be homologated by governing body FIM before the mega event which is expected to be a formality considering it has already hosted Formula 1. FSS COO Pushkar Nath told PTI that the homologation process has already begun with FIM officials inspecting the BIC track

“India is also a key market for the motorcycle industry and therefore, by extension, for MotoGP as the pinnacle of the two-wheeled world. We very much look forward to racing at Buddh International Circuit and can’t wait to welcome the fans through the gates to see this incredible sport in person.”

Buddh International Circuit’s debut will make it the 75th venue at which the premier class have raced, and India becomes the 31st country to host a motorcycle Grand Prix,” said MotoGP in a statement.

UP CM Adityanath added: “It’s a matter of great pride for Uttar Pradesh to host such a global event. Our government will provide full support to MotoGP Bharat.” Government support is a must to pull off an event of this scale and the race seems to have the blessings of both the state and central government.

Formula 1 had left India due to the financial health of the race promoters, taxation and customs issues. FSS, which will be shelling out millions of dollars to host the race every year, is confident of overcoming the logistical and tax hurdles. Around 5000 people, including riders and staff, work during MotoGP.

On his visit earlier this month, Dorna MD Carlos Ezpeleta said MotoGP weekend generates economic activity of 100 million euros. “This event will provide a major impetus to the economy by generating an influx of foreign investment in the state,” said Nand Gopal ‘Nandi’, a Cabinet Minister in the UP government.

With the country being the world’s largest two-wheeler market, Carlos had said that “MotoGP and India were meant for each other”. “It is a landmark moment for the country and we are happy to have played a role in that,” added FSS COO Pushkar Nath.

Women’s rights group calls on FIFA to kick Iran out of World Cup

0

Rights group Open Stadiums have called on FIFA to throw Iran out of the World Cup in Qatar in November because of the country’s treatment of women.

In a letter sent to FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Thursday, the organisation said Iranian authorities continued to refuse to allow female fans access to games inside the country despite pressure from the game’s governing body.

Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, MLS, more (U.S.)

“The Iranian FA is not only an accomplice of the crimes of the regime. It is a direct threat to the security of female fans in Iran and wherever our national team plays in the world. Football should be a safe space for us all,” the letter said.

“That is why, as Iranian football fans, it is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to raise our deepest concern about Iran’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

“Why would FIFA give the Iranian state and its representatives a global stage, while it not only refuses to respect basic human rights and dignities, but is currently torturing and killing its own people?

“Where are the principles of FIFA’s statues in this regard?

“Therefore, we ask FIFA, based on Articles 3 and 4 of its statutes, to immediately expel Iran from the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.”

The articles cited cover the issues of human rights and non-discrimination based on gender, race, religion and other matters, with breaches punishable by suspension or expulsion from the global body.

Neither FIFA nor Iran’s FA immediately responded to a Reuters request for comment.

– Marcotti: Iran protests and the pressure on their players
– Ogden: Why it was so hard to see Iran vs. Uruguay

The call comes as protests continued in several cities across Iran on Thursday against the death of young woman in police custody, state and social media reported, as a human rights group said at least 83 people had been killed in nearly two weeks of demonstrations.

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi has described the unrest as the latest in a series of moves against Iran by hostile Western powers since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Open Stadiums have campaigned over the last decade for women to be allowed to attend football matches in Iran, but with only limited success.

Under pressure from Infantino, a small group of female fans were granted access to Persepolis’s home leg of the 2018 Asian Champions League final in Tehran.

But there has been minimal progress since, with female fans barred from entering Iran’s World Cup qualifying game against Lebanon in Mashad in March, with video emerging of female supporters being pepper sprayed outside the stadium.

The Carlos Queiroz-coached national team played friendly matches during the recent international break against Uruguay and Senegal in Austria, with both games played behind closed doors over security concerns.

Iran are due to appear at their sixth World Cup and have been drawn to face England, Wales and the United States in Qatar.
