Surjeet Dev, Diamond Harbour: With the blessings of the goddess, the zamindar regained his life just before the cremation. Since then Durga Puja started at Bhattacharya house in Bardron village near Diamond Harbour. With the passage of time, there has been a cut in the arrangement. But even today the puja is still following the old rules (Durga Puja 2022).
Landlord Laxmikanta Bhattacharya was taken to the crematorium to confirm the doctor’s death. A strange thing happened after the body was laid on the pyre for cremation. The body moves. Laxmikant Bhattacharya, the sleeping zamindar, opened his eyes. Stories of miracles spread. After returning home, he recovered after long treatment. Then the zamindar organized Durga Puja with great fanfare. The year is 1729 AD. Durga Puja begins at Bhattacharya house in Bardron village near Diamond Harbor in South Twenty Four Parganas. Puja is about four hundred years old. Uma is worshiped in the house of the zamindar according to the ancient custom of the time.
Once upon a time, puja was performed in the landlord’s house with great splendor. Senior member of the family Satyagopal Bhattacharya said, Saptami, Ashtami and Navami were the three days from that time to offer lamb sacrifice. That trend continues today. Sugarcane and gourds are sacrificed in addition to the sacrificial goat. Once upon a time, gunshots were fired at Ashtami. Murki and Nadu were distributed on the four days of Puja. On Navami, the people of Saragram used to be invited to the zamindar’s house. Rice and meat were arranged for each of them.
Nimai Bhattacharya, another member of the family, said that those arrangements have been stopped long ago. But there is no shortage of worship of Goddess Durga. Adhering to all the old traditions, this time also the eleventh descendants of Bhattacharya family have organized matri aradhana. Many members of the Bhattacharya family live outside the village for work. But everyone returned to the village on the occasion of Puja. All the four days of Puja are celebrated together with only laughter, only joy and music. Very interesting women’s sindoorkhela in Dasami. After the end of Pratima Bisarjan phase, it is the turn of Vijaya’s prostration, Kolakuli and Mishtimukha. Apart from the family members, many people of the village also participated in the puja ceremony of the zamindarbari. Family puja should become universal.
